Madder is a perennial whose roots produce one of the oldest sources of lightfast red dye. Native to Eurasia, in grows well in our climate but needs protection (thick mulch) to overwinter. Trellis your plants to make weeding easier. Otherwise, the sticky/scratchy hairs on the plant cause a rash on your hands if you are trying to weed under their sprawling vines. You can begin harvesting the roots for dye in the second autumn.
