Even before Trump took office, ICE resumed its large raids with a large-scale immigration sweep in Bakersfield, CA and Kern County, CA. 87 were detained, one of which was a single mother who was on her way to work, after she had just dropped off her children at daycare. Since taking office, President Trump and his administration have unleashed their wave of deportations, even taking some detainees to Guantanamo, Cuba. This is far from families, friends, or legal support. The raids and deportations are spreading fear in our communities.
To fight back, there has been a wave of militant protests and grassroots education in cities “from Coast to Coast and border to border” from Los Angeles, CA to Charleston, SC, and from Detroit, MI to Eagle Pass TX. These actions have included spontaneous massive high school walkouts and freeway rallies. The vast vast majority of protestors are Chicano, Mexicanos, and Central Americans who make up most of the undocumented.
Now is the time for immigrant rights activists from across the Southwest, a historic homeland for Chicanos and Mexicanos, to meet in Los Angeles, in an emergency immigration summit against deportations. Let's come together to share lessons on how to organize and successfully fight back.
